Sea Survival

This course is a one-day Antigua and Barbuda Department of Maritime Services (ADOMS) – approved Sea Survival Course is designed to equip maritime personnel with the essential skills and knowledge needed to survive in emergency situations while at sea.

On successful completion, participants receive a certification that is required to apply for ADOMS Boatmaster Grade 3 and could also be required for employment on certain vessels under ADOMS or other regulations.

The ADOMS Sea Survival course includes a classroom theory presentation and a practical session in a pool with lifejackets and a liferaft. All course participants must be able to swim 50 meters (160 ft) unassisted prior taking the course.

What You Will Learn

Preparation for Survival – Understanding potential risks, knowing what actions to take before abandoning a vessel, and learning about essential safety equipment.

Lifejackets and Liferafts – Learning how to properly wear a lifejacket, deploy a liferaft, and board it safely.

Survival Techniques – Basic first aid, conserving energy, using distress signals effectively, and maximizing your chances of being rescued.

Search and Rescue Procedures – Understanding how search and rescue operations work, and how to signal for help effectively.

Prerequisites for this course:

  • 16 years of age
  • Ability to swim 50m (160ft) unassisted

The Sea Survival Course is a one-day training and is not the same as the STCW Basic Safety Training, which is a five-day course required for commercial maritime professionals of higher level. While the Sea Survival Course is valid for ADOMS Boatmaster Grade 3 certification, it does not meet the requirements for Boatmaster Grade 2, Grade 1, or the RYA Yachtmaster certification.
