Boatmaster Grade 2

Boatmaster Grade 2 course is designed for those wishing to apply for and take the Antigua & Barbuda Department of Marine Services (ADOMS) exams to obtain a Caribbean Boat Master’s license (CBML). After successfully completing the course, and passing the Assessment by a separate instructor, the student will receive a certificate of completion and will be eligible to receive a License of Boatmaster Grade 2 from ADOMS.

The Boatmaster Grade 2 course is designed for mariners who operate open vessels up to 24 meters in length, in protected waters up to 3 miles from a safe refuge.

The participants will develop skills in seamanship, boat handling and stability, engine repairs and boat maintenance, basic navigation both digital and chartwork, weather and meteorology, emergency procedures and passenger safety, Regulations for Preventing Collision at Sea, prevention of pollution and local regulations.

Duration of this course is 5 days and includes 3 days of classroom theory and 2 days of practical boat handling. There are 2 separate exams after each module – written theory exam and a practical assessment.

Prerequisites for this course:

  • 20 years of age
  • VHF/SRC Radio license (this can be obtained separately through us taking a RYA Marine Radio SRC course)
  • 6 months of service on a vessel
  • 3 months service on a similar vessel to the one for which they intend to serve in
  • STCW Basic Safety Training certification

Upon successful examination the student will receive a certificate of completion from Second Star Sailing and will be eligible to receive a License of Boat Master Grade 2 from ADOMS.

To receive the License of Boat Master Grade 2 from ADOMS you need the following:

  • Complete the Boatmaster course and pass the required examination (we will provide the documentation of completion)
  • Accumulate the necessary sea time (be ready to provide a logbook, or other document)
  • STCW course completion documentation
  • Undergo a medical examination at one of the ADOMS approved doctors (you need to receive a written medical conclusion document)

  • Await review and approval from ADOMS.
  • Receive the Boatmaster Grade 2 certification at ADOMS.

OPERATING AREA Every SCV that is operating in Protected waters not more than 3 miles from a safe refuge and which is an open boat carrying 12 or less passengers should have a person in charge who holds a Boatmaster Grade 3 License. Every other SCV that is operating in Protected Waters not more than 3 miles from a safe refuge should have a person in charge who holds a Boatmaster Grade 2 License (minimum). Every SCV that is operating with passengers and in Coastal Waters up to 20 miles offshore or operating beyond those limits should have a person in charge who holds a Boatmaster Grade 1 License.
