Women at the Helm Internship – meet our Interns for 2024/2025

Please welcome our new interns, Aliya, Emily, and Terriqua, who have joined our Women at the Helm internship program for local Antigua & Barbuda women! We’re thrilled to mentor these inspiring young women over the next 8 months as they begin their journey in the maritime industry.

This season, they will become a part of our team, will attend sailing and powerboat courses, and develop their personal community-based projects.  Aliya will be focused on promoting sailing as a fun and exciting career, getting the local community involved at the local industry events, and making our courses more eco-friendly. Emily will use her swimming experience to develop an adult swimming program—designed for those who’ve held back from boating because they can’t swim. Terriqua will engage with younger generations through our School Outreach program.

Aliya Brown

As a marketer with a passion for sailing, I’m blending my love for water sports with my career. My sailing journey began in high school and was rekindled through my involvement in regattas and events. Now, I’m actively pursuing certifications to advance my sailing skills. Through my work, I aim to promote the beauty and adventure of sailing while fostering local participation in the sport. I’m dedicated to environmental awareness, teamwork, and creating connections through the exciting world of sailing.

Living in and around the water has been Emily’s life since she could crawl. If she wasn’t at the beach playing with friends, she was competitively swimming for Antigua, or helping one of her past swim coaches manage his learn to swim classes. Last year, Emily started getting her yachting certifications and discovered her love for sailing. Since that time, Emily has collected quite a few certifications, but when she saw Second Star’s “Women at the Helm” program, she knew she wanted to do it since it would give a host of certifications, but most importantly, hands-on experience. Emily started the program this October and looks forward to learning and launching her new career in the industry.

Terriqua Christopher

I never knew that I had a passion for the sailing  industry until in 2018 when I met the Team Antigua Island Girls. From since then my life has changed drastically, from then I started learning how to sail at the National Sailing Academy and then gradually started racing. I decided to apply for this internship because it would expand my knowledge and skills in the sailing industry as I plan on building a career here, but I also applied to inspire and encourage other Antiguan females. I was inspired and now this is my passion, so I want other females to feel inspired and go after whatever it is you want whether or not it is marine related. Big things can come from our small island
