The RYA Marine Radio Short Range Communications Course covers the required syllabus so that you may sit for the Short Range Certificate exam. The subjects include routine operation of marine VHF radio including Digital Selective Calling, communications such as Sécurité, Pan Pan and MayDay calls, and the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).

The Marine SRC Operator Certification  authorizes the holder to operate a VHF radiotelephone, fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on board any British voluntary fit vessel.

Second Star Sailing offers this course both as a Shorebased classroom course and as an Online course, both followed by an in-person written and practical Assessment conducted by a qualified SRC Assessor at our school. Both versions of the course include and are supported by publication G31, the RYA VHF Radio textbook, which we offer in interactive ebook format.

Prerequisites for this course:

  • Minimums age: 16 years old

 

CLASSROOM course: 1 day, usually 09:00 to 17:00, with the assessment following or scheduled separately. Please note that a few hours of reading are required prior to attending the course.

The classroom course is structured with alternating practical modules to enhance your learning. During the course you will be working with real marine radios equipped with DSC, both fixed style and handheld, and you will be simulating many types of calls, from ship to ship communication all the way to emergency calls and procedures.

ONLINE/INTERACTIVE course: On your own time, about 10hrs, with the Assessment scheduled at your convenience at the school.

The online interactive course is developed by the RYA and also offers you the opportunity to have practise your communication skills. While you take the interactive course, should you have any questions, we are available for online assistance. We further offer the opportunity for you to come and familiarize yourself with the equipment prior to your Assessment.

Next Steps:

Once you have completed this course, you will be able to apply the knowledge you acquired either while sailing with your family and friends or while onboard during one of our more advanced courses, such as RYA Coastal Skipper,  on a Mileage Builder, or preparing for the RYA Yachtmaster Exam by attending one of our Yachtmaster Prep courses.
