RYA Diesel Engine

Edit

The RYA Diesel Engine course is a 1 day, combination theory / practical classroom course. It introduces you to the operational principles of the Diesel Engine, the course assists you in understanding  both the functioning and the basic maintenance of this essential element of your boating experience. Preventing and dealing with a mechanical breakdown at sea is a crucial skill that every skipper should have.

We structure the course with alternating theory and practical modules to increase your learning options. We also move from the classroom, where we work on an engine that is color-coded for enhanced learning, to the boat, where we will examine and manage the engine in situ – with its space constraints among other challenges.

Upon completion of the RYA Diesel Engine course, you will obtain your Certificate.  This course will increase your knowledge to help you be safer on board and in achieving your next RYA qualification. We highly recommend this course to all students from RYA Day Skipper to RYA Yachtmaster Offshore, but there are no prerequisites to participate.

The course will cover, among other things, the following topics:

  • Operational principles of a diesel engine
  • Engine systems and its parts
  • Diagnosis and fixes for common problems
  • How to change an impeller
  • How to change an oil and a fuel filter
  • Normal and extraordinary maintenance
  • Winter lay-up procedures
  • The outboard engine
