We want you to get the best from your Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Theory Course.
In choosing your course I am sure you have read about the pre-requisites or assumed knowledge being ‘Knowledge to Day Skipper Shorebased Standard’. This can be found here on the RYA web site and on page 84 of the ‘Yachtmaster Scheme Syllabus and Log Book’ G158 that you probably already have. It is an essential reference book for any Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster to be.
Done your RYA Day Skipper Theory?
So, if you have completed and passed your RYA Day Skipper Theory, great! However, ask yourself how long ago that was and if it is possible that you have forgotten a few things or are a little ‘rusty’. You will probably have received ‘RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Notes’ DSN (you can quickly obtain an e Book here). A read through this book will really help refresh your knowledge and get you ready to start the next phase of your training.
Didn’t do your theory with the RYA?
It is very possible you have gained your navigation training elsewhere, not through RYA courses. Of course, this is fine but it does need to have brought your to ‘Knowledge to Day Skipper Shorebased Standard’ and a good way to check this is by reading the Day Skipper Shorebased syllabus and, better still, reading The RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Notes (you can quickly obtain an e Book here). If there are subjects that are unfamiliar, it gives you the chance to study in advance, so you are ready to get the best from the course.
It looks like the syllabus is similar!
Yes, there are very few new subjects in Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Theory Course. However, there is more complexity and depth in this advanced course, so it is essential you have the basic knowledge to Day Skipper Shorebased Standard and that you are comfortable using it before you arrive. It is not possible to teach from the start in the time we have.
Preparation required!!
So, to get the best from this course some preparation is required. Refreshing your knowledge by reading and practising so you are up to speed for the next step.
If you haven’t done RYA courses, you really need to check your training has covered the subjects to the ‘Day Skipper Shorebased Standard’. Many RYA books and publication will help with this.
Who was it who said “Fail to prepare, prepare to fail”?
