RYA Powerboat Level1 and 2, ADOMS Boatmaster Grades 1, 2 or 3… what is the difference?

We often get asked about different levels between courses and it can get confusing...

RYA PowerboatRYA Powerboat Level 2 certification courses are primarily designed for recreational boaters and allow you to skipper your own boat or take out/charter a powerboat locally or on vacation, and you can obtain an International Certificate of Competence with your RYA PBL2.  It aims to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats.

  • RYA Powerboat Level 1 (Start Powerboating)
  • RYA Powerwerboat Level 2 you do not have to take PBL1 before you take PBL2.
  • RYA Powerboat certificates can be commercially endorsed, allowing the holders to use them while working on a superyacht for example.
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification on its own does not allow the holder to run charters in Antigua.

ADOMS Boatmaster courses are requirements toward the professional qualifications needed to work on a vessel in Antigua and in the wider Caribbean, and range from Boatmaster Grade 3 to Boatmaster Grade 1 (which is the highest level). This course is a combination of theory and practice and focuses on safety, navigation, seamanship, SVC code, and boat handling.  If you want detailed information on the difference between different levels of Boatmaster Grades, click on the file below the table.
