Second Star Sailing
is Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Recognized Training Centre and offers, alongside its Italian sailing courses and learning cruises, the entire RYA Sail Training Cruising Program. Our courses cover both Theory and Practice, from Start Sailing to Day Skipper and all the way through Yachtmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean.
The theory courses that lead towards the different Yachtmaster Certificates of Competence are about 40 hours of classroom time plus written exams, be it for Coastal/Offshore or Yachtmaster Ocean. Our Shorebased courses also include specialist short classes such as the RYA’s First Aid at Sea, VHF/SRC Radio, Diesel Engine, and Professional Practices & Responsibilities (PPR). Some of these courses can also be taken online for your convenience.
The practical courses range from the Start Yachting and Competent Crew to Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster.
All our RYA courses are held in English, and most of our instructors are multilingual. Basic English language skills will be required, although no prior knowledge of technical or nautical terms is needed. If you have any questions regarding your level of English, please do not hesitate to call us – we can help you assess it!
The achievement of courses and RYA / MCA Yachtmaster exams enable to:
- Yachtmaster Coastal – vessels under 24 metres & 200Gt within 20 miles of a safe haven
- Yachtmaster Offshore – vessels up to 200Gt within 150 miles from a safe haven
- Yachtmaster Ocean – vessels up to 200Gt without a limits
The Commercial Endorsement of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) at each level described above will qualify you to the professional use of each of the titles according to their individual restrictions.
The classic sequence is to take the Yachtmaster Coastal/Offshore Theory course, take the written test, and follow it with a practical Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore Practical Prep Week followed by the Exam. We also offer the option to take these as a combined course, by taking a 9 day Intensive followed by the exam. Once you have obtained your Yachtmaster Offshore you can then sit for the Yachtmaster Ocean exam (you can take the theory course prior to that time). This is all subject to an evaluation of your qualifications, mileage, days at sea, and your radio and First Aid certifications.
