The RYA Marine Radio Short Range Communications Course covers the required syllabus so that you may sit for the Short Range Certificate exam. The Marine SRC Operator Certification then authorizes the holder to operate a VHF radiotelephone, fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on board any British voluntary fit vessel.
Second Star Sailing offers this course both as a Shorebased classroom course and as an Interactive/Online course, both followed by an in-person written and practical examination conducted by a qualified SRC Assessor at our school. Both versions of the course include and are supported by publication G31, the RYA VHF Radio textbook, which you can have in your choice of hardcopy or ebook format.
The aim of our SRC VHF Radio Course is to introduce, explain, and gain proficiency with the operation of a VHF Radio equipped with DSC, with the rules and regulations governing it’s operation and with the correct procedures to use in all situations, as well as introducing you to other forms of communication such as Navtex, and emergency procedures and transmissions.
The classroom course is structured with alternating and practical modules to enhance your learning. During the course you will be working with real marine radios equipped with DSC, both fixed style and handheld, and you will be simulating many types of calls, from ship to ship communication all the way to emergency calls and procedures.
The online interactive course is developed by the RYA and also offers you the opportunity to have practice your communication skills. While you take the interactive course, should you have any questions, we are available for online assistance. We further offer the opportunity for you to come and familiarize yourself with the equipment prior to your Assessment.
